Description
The Vineyard Hotel in Newlands is a bit of a Cape Town institution. It’s best known for its award-winning fine dining restaurants, luxurious accommodation and beautiful gardens (not to mention the roving tortoises). Despite all these claims to fame, what we love best about the Vineyard hotel is its coffee offering. They have partnered with our good friends at Quaffee to set up an on site nano-roastery, producing fresh beans for use at their cafe and various coffee stations. They’ve invested in some of the best equipment, barista training and beans, so we’d highly recommend you stop by for a coffee when you’re in the area.
If you’re not in Newlands, we’re happy to be able to share the Vineyard’s lovely coffee with you. Quaffee already has an expansive and delectable range of single origins and blends, but they’ve designed a special blend just for the Vineyard hotel. Unlike its other blends, this one is specifically formulated for optimal espresso extraction (as the Vineyard guests can attest). Having said that, we still enjoy it in many other brew methods.
While the contents of the blend vary, it is a roughly 50/50 split between African and Central American coffees, most of which are speciality grade, usually with a solid Brazilian base. The result is always beautiful and balanced – a coffee that both a refined palate and a casual coffee drinker can enjoy.
The Vineyard blend is sweet, medium-bodied and while it has a bit of acidity to liven it up, there is nothing overpowering or tart about it. You’ll find a medley of flavours in the cup including nutty notes, berries and hints of stone fruit. It performs well in milk (if you’re so inclined) or as straight espresso, but we always quite enjoy it in an Aeropress, moka pot or plunger.
